A couple of hundred entries ago, I blogged about an album by Marianne Faithfull, whose experiences since her pop success in the 60s had taken a serious toll on her voice. Which is why it was such a shock to listen to these recent recordings to a contemporary. Jane Birkin had her first hit in 1969, and yet her voice here is as waifish, as gentle, as fragile and as pure as ever. There's something hopeful in discovering that getting older doesn't have to mean getting worn out. At least not yet, it doesn't. |
